Learning is being able to tie new concepts to prior experiences and concrete images. Starting at the basic, physical principle and spiraling up allows a student to think in the abstract while connecting it to the simplest form. Learning is also discovering and having the desire to discover. A student's drive will lead him/her to learn, explore and retain more, being able to continue to build their knowledge.
How can learning be best effectuated by a teacher/trainer?
A teacher has to first have a solid understanding of the concept. (They don't need to know everything about everything, but they cannot be tentative.) Then they can set up a plan to lead the student down the path of discovery. A teacher can also give students the opportunity to be independent in learning. There are many sources of information that can be utilized by the student. Helping them discover their own autonomy becomes more than a lesson in science class. It becomes a life lesson as well.

ReplyDeleteI liked how you put "lead the student down the path of discovery" I think this is when teaching becomes the most effective. Because it instills a desire to learn and often creates a passion for discovery.

I like how you wrote "learning is also discovering and having a desire to discover". I think that once a student has that desire to discover, they are pretty much hooked on learning for life. I think that desire lasts for many, many years. I also like how you put that the teacher leads the student down the path of discovery.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your comment about leading students down a path of discovery- what a great description of what a teacher's role should be in the classroom. I also agree with your statement about students becoming autonomous with their learning. This hit home with me because too often as a teacher I take the responsibility for their learning when it is really theirs. Great insight, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDelete"Desire to discover," that's the way to reach a learner. I like that comment. I think that it would also help to create "independence in learners." That's what we're doing in this life is trying to develop learners.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great thoughts.
I too feel that it can be invaluable for a teacher to help a student become independent in learning in many respects, primarily because this can be linked to the students own motivation, efforts, and consequent experiences to learn.
ReplyDeleteso if I remember right you are a business trainer...how could you be helped through the use of spiral curriculum in your employees' schooling?
ReplyDeleteWow! That's a great question. It would make training adults (18 year olds sometimes don't act adult, just saying...) so much easier if they had a solid base in math, being professional in writing, etc. You've been a trainer also, right? so you may have experience seeing what ground has to be re-plowed so to speak.
